Human rights are global, indivisible, and inalienable fundamental principles aimed at ensuring equality and dignity for all.
Human rights are defined in a number of United Nations conventions and agreements, including the International Bill of Human Rights, which consists of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (adopted in 1948), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR, 1966), and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR, 1966); and international human rights conventions such as the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Declaration on Fundamental Rights (1989).
Maxscale holds human rights at high standards and conducts its operations with a commitment to promoting internationally recognized human rights.
Maxscale’s work as a development financier and responsible impact investor is founded on respecting and advancing human rights. Through their own activities, responsible corporations can have a direct or indirect positive impact on human rights, such as decent labor, gender equality, and freedom of association, as an employer, a corporate citizen, and a neighbor for local communities. Maxscale is committed to encouraging and strengthening this good impact as a development funder.
Due to the nature and complexity of the activities, there is a high potential for positive impact, yet there is also a high potential for negative human rights risks and impacts that can be severe.
Maxscale endeavours to actively and continuously identify, avoid, mitigate, and manage potential and actual adverse human rights impacts associated with its transactions, and to take action to address them using the United Nations Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) as a practical framework.
Human Rights Statement
The use of the IFC Performance Standards (IFC PS) and the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work as the reference framework for Maxscale’s environmental and social management means that assessments of Human rights impacts of investments have been carried out to a certain extent for more than 10 years.
Maxscale has adopted its human rights declaration, which is an integral aspect of Maxscale’s Environmental and Social Policy, to improve and further expand its commitment to human rights management.
Maxscale employs the UNGPs as a framework for managing human rights impacts and has integrated a human rights perspective into its management and investment processes, including environmental and social risk management, as shown in the image below.
Discussions and consultations with stakeholders and experts were crucial in the development and preparation of the human rights statement.
